Royal Society Summer Exhibition 2019 : Timber Towers of Tomorrow

The Centre for Natural Material Innovation showcased its research on 'Timber towers of tomorrow' at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London. The exhibit featured an in-house constructed stand modeled after an apartment within the proposed Oakwood Timber Tower. It highlighted the center's research, including 3D-printed cell walls, samples from the Mary Rose, and skyscraper models from around the world. Timber, being lighter than concrete, offers a sustainable alternative as it can be grown and absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Engineered timber advancements have the potential to transform global construction by replacing conventional manufactured materials with natural alternatives.
Cambridge Science Festival

Our engagement with the Cambridge Science Festival involves designing and executing a series of hands-on demonstrations, led by members of our group. Through these interactive activities, we aim to make complex scientific concepts accessible and engaging to a diverse audience. This direct engagement with the public helps foster a greater understanding and appreciation for scientific research, promoting science literacy and inspiring the next generation of scientists. By actively participating in the Cambridge Science Festival, we contribute to the wider community by sharing our knowledge and passion for science in an accessible and interactive manner.
Royal Society Summer Exhibition 2017 : Mind the Nano Gap

Here we discussed the development of nanoscale biosensors to accurately detect trace amounts of bio-molecules for various healthcare applications. These biosensors utilize advanced nanoscale techniques to measure molecules in extremely small quantities. The goal is to improve detection technologies to identify signaling molecules that indicate our health, making them visible by pulling them into nanogaps between sensor components. Promising techniques include using nanopores, atomically thin membranes, and tiny gaps in gold nanostructures. The exhibit highlighted the University of Cambridge's latest NanoScience research on using these methods to detect molecules in urine, enabling real-time health monitoring and drug testing in hospitals, and even potential applications for home use.
UK Japan Young Scientists Programme

In collaboration with Dr Eric Albone from the Clifton Scientific Trust we have participated in the UK‑Japan Young Scientists programme for many years. The programme brings 16‑18 year old students from both countries to live together and work in small international teams in leading universities with British and Japanese scientists and engineers. At the end of the week, each team presents its achievements and answers questions in front of an audience including distinguished guests.

PPI Engagements

We actively engage with a diverse range of Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) groups. This engagement allows us to incorporate the perspectives, experiences, and insights of patients and the public into our research and decision-making processes. By involving PPI groups, we ensure that our work addresses the needs and concerns of the communities we serve. This inclusive approach helps us to design more effective interventions, improve healthcare outcomes, and promote patient-centered care.
