Commercialisation of Research

The Scherman Group has always had a strong focus on commercialisation of research we encourage collaborations between academia, industry, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Many group members have either gone on to found their own companies or have directly commercialised research from their time spent in the group.

A large number of routes to commercialisation exist for group members which are well supported by engagement with Cambridge Enterprise, the commericalisation arm of the University, who support the translation of cutting-edge research and technologies into successful commercial ventures. They provide funding, expert advice, mentoring, and access to networks to help researchers and students bring their ideas to market.

There is also access to events and programmes run by various organisations across Cambridge such as the Judge Buisness School.

Judge Business School

The Judge Business School houses the Entrepreneurship Centre which supports entrepreneurial talent development and commercialisation of new ideas. It enhances the development of management capacity within the Cambridge entrepreneurial ecosystem and beyond and develops and shares leadership skills.

Spin out companies

Several companies have been spun out of the Scherman Group and even more from the Melville Laboratory. These companies have been started based on research developed within the group and have gone on to become independent and successful companies in their own right.

Clinical translation of research

Some of our research is currently in the pipeline towards the clinic. Specifically, we have developed a hydrogel platform delivery approach that we are currently translating towards a Phase I trial for the treatment of Glioblastoma, a deadly form of brain cancer. 

Translation of energy related research

We are interested in the commericalisation of our library of electron/energy mediators. They hold significant potential for a variety of applications related to energy storage and conversion. We are exploring their application in a variety of clean-tech applications.
